Moana is the latest instalment into the Disney franchise, Featuring the voices of Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk, the film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of the chief in a Polynesian tribe, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of saving her people. I just want to get one thing straight before I start this review, I absolutely love this movie - and my girlfriend brought me the T-shirt to prove it! Yet again Disney have absolutely nailed the animation again, this movie is stunning and the sea theme really works in that sense. The voice acting is so perfectly matched to the characters, Dwayne Jonhnson makes an excellent voice acting debut as Maui and another fantastic debut is the perfectly chosen voice of Moana (but everyone's favourite character has to be Pua.....right?)......(or Hei Hei). ![]() A great story, entertaining characters and an amazing soundtrack, gets Moana an .......

A Monster Calls is a 2016 dark fantasy drama film directed by J. A. Bayona and written by Patrick Ness. The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Lewis MacDougall, and Liam Neeson, and tells the story of Conor (MacDougal), a child whose mother (Jones) is terminally ill; one night, he is visited by a giant tree-like monster (Neeson), who states that he will come back each night and tell him three stories. The first thing to note about this movie is that although alot of the advertising markets it as a children's adventure movie, its far from it. This movie is dark, very dark and it really works for the story, Connor is going through a very dark part of his life and the overall dark theme to the movie helps the audience to feel the way he's feeling. The acting in this movie is superb, MacDougall gives a great young actor performance and really connects with the audience so that we can feel his pain, the make up on Felicity Jones looks incredibly realistic and she gives a tear jerking performance as a dying mother who only wants what's best for her son, Sigourney Weever also gives a great supporting performance as the boys grandmother. But by far my favourite performance in this entire movie is Neeson as the monster, I wont give anything away about his voice acting so just go and see it. The effects in this movie are up to todays standard but are nothing special but the story's that the monster tells are told along with animations and these animations are beautiful and are by far one of my favourite aspects of the movie. Emotion is another thing that this movie really gets right, if you manage to leave with dry eyes then there is definitely something wrong with you. ![]() Overall A Monster Calls is a dark, emotional but some how happy movie that really makes us feel something as we are watching, it gets a ..... Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2016 fantasy film directed by David Yates and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. A spin-off of the Harry Potter film series, it was produced and written by J. K. Rowling, in her screenwriting debut, and inspired by her book of the same name. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Ron Perlman and Colin Farrell in supporting roles. It is the first instalment in the Fantastic Beasts series, and the ninth overall in J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World, which is the franchise that began with the Harry Potter films. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have seen New York destroyed in the cinema. There’s something about the city’s iconic status that seems to invite film-makers to trash it. But just when you think you have seen every conceivable version of skyscraper-toppling movie mayhem, a gigantic creature that looks like a mutated rhinoceros thunders through Central Park zoo in search of love. Fantastic Beasts was so much fun to watch for so many reasons. Eddie Redmayne is incredible in this movie, if anyone can watch this without falling in love with his performance then there is something wrong with you. He is captivating and adorable as the mumbling wizard Newt Scamander and does not fail yet again to give us what is in my opinion an award wining performance, which is perfectly put in with the amazing supporting cast which includes a shocking reveal at the end. What follows may as well be a high-end, period-themed upgrade to the popular Pokémon GO iPhone game, as Scamander plays a freckle-faced, tweed-jacketed version of Ash Ketchum, scrambling to track down and recapture the escaped creatures before things get really out of hand and that makes for a fun, world building movie that really adds to the potter-verse. The effects are great, the laughs are perfectly executed and all of the story's, although confusing, are all interesting. ![]() Overall Fantastic Beasts was a lot of fun and I cannot wait for the other four movies, I think I'll give it a ....... La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. The film's title refers both to the city of Los Angeles and to being out of touch with reality. This movie has some positives and it has some negatives, the first positive for me was the performances, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are fantastic in this movie and their chemistry really benefits the movie and the love story that's being told, there are also a lot of great supporting performances, including a strange but fun cameo from John Legend. The cinematography is by far my favourite aspect of the movie, nearly every shot looks incredible and there is one particular scene near the end that looks absolutely incredible. The first negative that I have with this movie is that the first ten or so minutes aren't very interesting and there are a lot of moments in the movie where it goes a bit dull and nothing really happens, nearly every movie suffers with this but La La Land suffers quite a bit. Another issue that I had was that the ending just wasn't as good as it could have been and it was fairly frustrating. The final point that I'm going to talk about is the musical side of the movie, which is a huge part of it, the main part in fact and the question is did it work? - and the answer is.......yes!! Although some of the songs are boring and slightly repetitive, there are some great 80's pops songs thrown in there and the songs that do work (which is almost all of them) work perfectly and are all absolute masterpieces, I've been listening to city of stars so much since watching it and the main song ('La La') is such a fun, lively song that really works in a fun and lively movie. Sometimes when the characters burst into song it just doesn't work and that is not something that a musical should have, but the quality of their songs more than makes up for that. ![]() Putting the very few negatives aside, this is a fun, colourful, vibrant movie that really understands emotion and allows people to realise that its okay to have crazy dreams, jaw dropping cinematography, an exceptional cast and a fantastic soundtrack lands La La Land an Split is a 2016 American psychological thriller-horror film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The film stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy and Betty Buckley and follows a man with 23 different personalities who kidnaps three girls. Is Split a perfect horror movie.....no, is Split a really good horror movie.....not really, but it is a lot of fun. James McAvoy is incredible in this movie, his performances as this broken man with so many identities is so captivating, he somehow manages to show us what personality he's portraying just by moving his eyebrow in a certain way or by changing his posture ever so slightly. The supporting performances are extremely good as well, especially the character of Kevin's psychiatrist. Something that this movie does excellently is tension, it builds it up so well to the point where your on the edge of your seat screaming for something to just happen so that you can finally breathe. ![]() An interesting and very unique story with excellent characters and even better acting gets Split a.......... Logan is a 2017 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox, is the tenth installment in the X-Men film series, and the third film focused on Wolverine, following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013). It was directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Frank and Michael Green, from a story by Mangold, and also stars Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant and Dafne Keen. The film follows a past-his-prime Logan embarking on a road trip across America for one final mission. Now I'm a big x-men fan, I really like the comics and I like some of the movies, some are very bad. After coming out of the cinema from watching logan I can safely say that this is not only my favourite Wolverine movie but my favourite X-men movie. Logan is a lot of fun but at the same time manages to pack such an emotional punch and that is done through the characters that we are journeying with. Hugh Jackman sharpens his claws for his final performance as the wolverine and it is such a powerful display, there are also two superb supporting performances from Professor X and X- 23 and a great villain performance in the form of Donald Pierce. The visuals are very impressive and the effects are on one of the best elements of the movie as all of the gore (there's a lot of it, and I mean a lot) is done so well and looks so realistic, there is also a lot of fast cam in the movie and pretty much all of it is done perfectly. Some of the moments towards the end of the movie will almost certainly have you in tears, I may have even cried when I got home, so be ready with the tissues. ![]() Overall Logan is a fun but dark and gritty movie and is an absolutely perfect send off to a perfect character, Hugh Jackman will be greatly missed as the vest wearing alcoholic, Logan gets an............... ![]() The Lego Batman Movie is a 2017 3D animated superhero comedy movie, directed by Chris Mckay written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris Mckenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern and John Whittingham. The film, an international co - production of the United States, Australia and Denmark, is a spin off instalment of The Lego Movie, with its story focusing on the DC comics character Batman as he attempts to overcome his greatest fear to stop The Joker's latest plan. While Will Arnett reprises his role as Batman for the film, the other major characters were voiced by Zach Galifianakis (the Joker), Michael Cera (Robin) , Rosario Dawson (Batgirl) and Ralph Fiennes (Alfred). The Lego Batman Movie is both the third feature film to be produced by Warner animation group and the second to be based on Lego properties. I cannot tell you how much fun I had watching this movie, I even went back a second time to watch it again, this movie just got everything right, the voice acting, the animation, the jokes, everything. Now when it comes to Batman I'm a huge fan and I mean huge and I can safely say that Will Arnett has cradled Batman under his huge man chest and treated him well. Another surprising element of the movie that I loved was Zach Galifianakis as the Joker, the animation even made him look kinda cute, Michael Cera was also a lot of fun as Dick Grayson (Robin) which was a nice surprise as the trailers made him look kinda annoying but he managed to balance himself nicely on the line between funny and annoying. I also want to give a really quick honourable mention to the Alfred and Bane as they had me in stitches throughout the whole movie *does Bane impression*. You wouldn't even expect a movie like this to have music but it does.....and its amazing, there is a song towards the end of the film that I'm not ashamed to say that I've been listening to it on repeat for a worrying amount of time. ![]() The Lego Batman movie is a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend you to go and see it, it get's an.......... Beauty and the Beast is a 2017 American, musical, romantic, fantasy film directed by Bill Condon. A co-production between Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville films, the film is a Live action and computer animation remake of Disney's 1991 animated movie of the same name, itself an adaptation of Jeanne - Marie Leprince Beaugomont's eighteenth-century fairy tale. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Emma Watson (Belle) and Dan Stevens (Beast) as the titular characters with Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice), Josh Gad (Lefou), Ewan Mcregor (Lumiere), Ian Mckellen (Cogsworth) and Emma Thompson (Mrs Potts) in supporting roles. I'm skipping the build up and the shitty jokes, Beauty and the Beast is a cinematic masterpiece. This movie can do absolutely everything, it can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it can make you smile, and I did plenty of that, except from crying....okay I teared up a bit, lets just move on. The casting in this movie is perfect, every actor fits their character so well that you almost forget that there is an original. Emma Watson is great as Belle and her voice perfectly aids her character, Dan Stevens is so much fun to watch as the beast as he gets every aspect of the character right, his sense of humour, his anger, his grumpiness and especially the voice. Honourable mentions are definitely needed for Josh Gad, Ian Mckellan and Emma Thompson, but by far my favourite performance of the whole movie was Luke Evans as Gaston. He is so well matched with his character that he's on level with Heath Ledger as the Joker, he's fantastic as the big, lumbering idiot and his song is one of my favourites, credit to Josh Gad as well for that song. This movie also has some great visuals along with beautiful set design and even better costume design that includes the yellow dress that Belle wore that took a team of four 12,000 hours to design and create. The final topic that I will mention is by far the most important, the music, it's incredible. Even though there aren't a lot of the original songs in the movie, which I admire due to the independence that creates, the new songs are on par with the originals in my opinion, a solo song that is sung by the Beast towards the end of the movie (called 'Evermore') is now one of my favourite songs of all time and myself and my girlfriend have listened to it a lot, and I mean a lot. Be our guest is also a lot of fun in this movie especially because Obi-Wan Kenobi is singing it. ![]() Beauty and the Beast is an absolutely perfect cinematic experience and a great tribute to the original, a round of applause is due to Disney for including the first confirmed gay character in one of there movies, incredible casting and acting, great set design and costumes and a fantastic soundtrack earns Beauty and the Beast an.......... |
